Nestled in the Canyonlands of southeastern Utah, this project was an incredible exercise in contextualism, or finding site-specific solutions. The owners had dreamed of a home that worked within the site’s unique slope, captured the views of the surrounding natural landscape and, lastly, that lived like a cozy single story house but had guestrooms when needed. From this list of seemingly divergent desires, we developed the “bridge” concept. The linear bridge worked with the steep slope, positioning the main rooms of the house at an elevation that captured the best view, while having additional rooms when needed for entertaining. Our choice of materials, such as colored concrete and Corten steel, broke up the massing of the structure, and seamlessly integrated the architecture into the surrounding desert.
