The owners of Tangled Tails Ranch wanted to build an incredible family equestrian estate – complete with a residence, arena, barn, riding trails, paddocks, caretaker’s apartment, chicken coop, and animal foster shelter. While our design decisions were rooted in the Texas architectural vernacular, we integrated the owners’ fondness for “mountain modern” materials to create an approach unique to Tangled Tails Ranch. The buildings feature stone quarried in Montana, with hot rolled steel from a local craftsman, and beautifully handcrafted modern woodwork from the owners themselves. The layout of the master plan and integration of the structures allowed for a Paddock Paradise-based track style and positive reinforcement equine training center. It has blossomed into a destination for animal behavior science students to explore the amazing talents of the various animals on site, and for all to enjoy the beautiful vistas, ponds, shade trees, and quiet areas for contemplation scattered all over the property.
